I am unable to observe the issue in a virtual machine, launching chromium-browser while firefox is running doesn't make it unresponsive.

This sounds like it could be a shortage of memory where your system starts swapping, thus making firefox unresponsive for a while. How much RAM do you have, and do you have swap set up?
