Bug Description

As many people I use a password manager in order to manage my logins. For that I simply copy/paste the username and password in the respective fields from another application. Given some webpages block this by JavaScript, I have the following about:config preference:

dom.event.clipboardevents.enabled=false

This mostly as an information, because it doesn't seem to affect the problem.

Take a login page (I tried AliExpress - https://login.aliexpress.com/), and right click in the username field. A context menu is shown, containing -amongst others- "Paste".
Click right in the password field, and the context menu is not shown. I would expect it to be shown.

Using Ctrl-V does work.

I tried a recreated profile in order to exclude profile-based issues. The same happens.

This does not happen on Ubuntu 16.04LTS (59.0.2+build1-0ubuntu0.16.04.3) with equivalent version Firefox (59.0.2)

I am not 100% sure this is a firefox issue. Perhaps this is Gnome related, because I use the default interface on each installation: Unity on 16.04LTS and Gnome3 on 18.04LTS.

Firefox installed from snap doesn’t have this problem https://support.mozilla.org/de/questions/1214123#answer-1104753 so the cause might be some Ubuntu modification.

Curiously, switching the input method from IBus to i.e. XIM fixes the issue https://support.mozilla.org/de/questions/1214123?page=2#answer-1152091

I can reliably reproduce the issue in a 18.04 VM with firefox 63.0. Unsetting the GTK_IM_MODULE environment variable makes the issue go away (see also bug #1765304, which is probably related).

The same version of firefox in Ubuntu 18.10 is not affected, so it appears to be a bionic-only issue (which is consistent with what has been observed for similar issues related to firefox+ibus+password fields).

Changed in firefox (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → Medium
summary: - Context menu does not form on passwords fields
+ Context menu does not show on passwords fields

A update to Ubuntu received today seems to have fixed the issue.

I'm no longer able to reproduce the issue.

It seems to have been fixed by this patch:

Thanks for the confirmation. The update that fixed the issue is gnome-shell 3.28.3-0ubuntu0.18.04.4. I am therefore marking this bug as a duplicate of bug #1765304.
