Bug Description

The bookmarks menu as well as the history menu don't show / have mnemonics for the items in the menu. The only way to access items in these menus is by using the cursor keys (or the mouse :( )

The other menus (file, edit, view, tools and help) do have the mnemonics for the items

Example
<alt>F brings up the file menu; mnemonic V gives print preview
<alt>B brings up the bookmark menu; no option to go to an item by using a mnemonic

Very sorry that I forgot to mention this. Same version of Firefox under Windows does not suffer from this problem. This is Ubuntu (or Linux) specific.

Well, Firefox does not use mnemonics for bookmark items on any platform. They're pretty pointless for dynamic content such as bookmarks and history anyway.

If you're referring to the inability to select a bookmark item by pressing the key corresponding to it's first character, then this is not a Firefox bug, but a gtk limitation. It just doesn't support that

affects: firefox (Ubuntu) → gtk+2.0 (Ubuntu)

Chris, sorry to disagree but under Windows 7 it behaves as expected (items in the bookmark menu do have mnemonics and are accessible that way).

Further, if this was a gtk+2.0 limitation, why do the items in other menus have mnemonics? I might be missing something here?

I did check the other bug report (after your reference to the duplicate) but it does not quite sound the same.

I think Wim is referring to the static items in the menus (such as Bookmarks->Show All Bookmarks), not the dynamic content. And, as mentioned, mnemonic keys are defined for the other submenus - he is not expecting the first letter to work, but to have a mnemonic specifically defined for each static submenu.

Sorry Radu (?), I think you misunderstand.

I expect a mnemonic for each item in the bookmarks menu. If I bookmark e.g. launchpad.net/ubuntu and the description in the bookmark menu is 'Ubuntu in launchpad', I'm used to the situation where I can quickly access it using <alt>B followed by 'U'. And the mnemonic is always the first character of the description.
If I have multiple entries starting with U (e.g. 'ubuntu forums' and 'ubuntu in launchpad') I press 'U' till the desired one is selected and press <enter> to load it.

If my memory serves me well, any version of Firefox that I have used under WinXP, Win7 and Ubuntu 6.06/8.04/10.04 behaved like this. It's now with Ubuntu 12.04 in combination with Firefox 15.0.1 that this functionality has changed. I will check a standard and up-to-date 10.04 install tomorrow (time permitting) and post back in about 12 hours.

As promised the results for Ubuntu 10.04. It works as expected (although on this test system mnemonics are not shown). So <alt>B followed by 'L' selects the first item in the bookmark menu that starts with L. If it's the only one starting with L, it will request the page.

And firefox version 15.0.1

Ok, thanks for the added explanations.

This is then indeed a duplicate of bug #913981, and it is not supported by gtk, as Chris mentioned.

OK,

Please (try to) explain the difference between Ubuntu 10.04 and 12.04 with regards to this issue. After that, I will keep quiet ;)
