I'm a bit confused...

I'm trying to set up Firefox so that it will always open .nzb files with my newsgroup reader. No matter how many times I tell Firefox to "do this automatically", it always prompts me. The alternative to clicking this every single time seems to be to tell it to always "save as", and then double click the downloaded file. Either way, I have to click twice for each nzb (once to initiate the download, and then once to "activate" it). Is this the same issue that's being discussed in this bug report, and, if so, why are developers so hesitant to allow users to determine how they want their browser to handle file downloads?
