Firefox used to work with no bugs in karmic alpha 5. This time, I logged on and lauched it. It crashed.

On my system this sometimes happens when I send a bug-report via "ubuntu-bug package":

~$ubuntu-bug compiz
~$
Gdk-ERROR **: The program 'firefox' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)'.
  (Details: serial 342 error_code 3 request_code 20 minor_code 0)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
aborting...

had to delete my .mozilla directory to get firefox to launch.
this was after installing the latest version of karmic while keeping my /home partition
it all worked fine with alpha4...had nothing but trouble since 15/9/09

It is definitely a firefox 3.5 bug. When I changed my /usr/bin/firefox simlink to point to firefox-3.0 instead of firefox-3.5 the problem went away.

I used to have this bug when opening firefox via "firefox -ProfileManager", then selecting and opening a profile made it crash.
It may be some sort of issue with existing profiles, firefox-3.0 profiles, for example?

Andrea, you may be right about it being a conflict between ff3 and ff3.5 . When I upgraded to karmic from jaunty, f3.0 remained on my system and these crashes in ff3.5 happened. When I did a clean fresh install of karmic, the crashes in ff3.5 disappeared.

Not the case for me - these crashes happened on a fresh installation of karmic. When trying to report a bug even. Haven't even tried the upgrade method yet. Maybe the bug I encountered is a different one after all.

Affermative, it seems profiles aren't the issue.

I am able to reproduce it:
 - calling firefox -ProfileManager
 - calling ubuntu-bug firefox-3.5

anytime with firefox-3.0 profile, with firefox-3.5 profile or no .mozilla folder at all.

Noticed firefox crashed calling ubuntu-bug firefox-3.5 even before creating a .mozilla folder...

In my case, crash appears also in a fresh install of karmic.
