I think the key phrase there is "relative usage ratio of the four search
places". There are several ways to search google in the default UI and
this *experiment* seems to be looking at which one(s) people use the most.

I'm not part of the Ubuntu distro/desktop team though, am not a
developer, and I speak here only for myself as an Ubuntu user. An Ubuntu
user deeply saddened by the tone of some of the comments here.)
