Would be awesome to have such a preference. Firefox has 3 other indications for the loading (tab, bottom left and right), so I did not notice the change for some time. The Sugar browser (http://dev.sugarlabs.org/ticket/851) does not have such indicators, so the spinning cursor was always a great way to see if the browser was busy loading.
