I'm sorry but I will have to disagree here. If the icon is wrong on OS X, then it should just have been changed there, not unilaterally removed.
In my opinion, if anything it(the cursor) should just change when there's actual meaningful network activity, such as ajax loading or the page itself loading. That kind of transfer usually indicates to the user he should wait, which is not the case when waiting for images.

In any case if this is not going to be backported then there's a clear need that some of the "gurus" should at least *suggest* ways to restore something similar to the old behavior in an extension.

And I'd like to point again that both opera and safari have the cursor change on load while loading pages. That behavior is in *no* way odd. And frankly it's the kind of thing the user should actually have a choice on.
