only remove on OS X

We've got several options:
 1. Wontfix this bug,
 2. put the code back in place, #ifndef'd for OS X,
 3. Add a pref
   3.1 defaulting to off on all platforms, or
   3.2 defaulting to off only on OS X.

I'm not the right person to make the decision.
This patch implements 2.
