Chrome has the semi-loading cursor as well. This also seems to be the os standard on Windows, when a new folder is loaded in Windows explorer or a new file opened in most applications, the cursor turns to the loading cursor.

Seems like this is pretty much expected by most users. Just because it wasn't 100% doesn't mean it should be removed, IMHO, it only needs to be made more accurate.
