Using ThunderBird version 3.0a2pre (2008060508), I believe this bug is a lot worse than I assumed. I think the behaviour described below is caused by this bug anyway.

I have my mail accounts set up to automatically check for new mail. I also have it set to remember passwords. This doesn't quite seem to work reliably for my gmail account though, so i frequently have to re-enter my gmail password.

Now, when I got up this morning, Thunderbird had about 50 (!) or so password dialogs up, all asking for my gmail password. And it's not easy to get rid of them either, since all the dialogs are in exactly the same location and modal, but the topmost window wasn't the one that could get focus.

I managed to get rid of a dozen or so, but in the end I just gave up and killed TB.

So this to me is another case of what this bug is really about, i.e. serialising password prompts.
