I believe the problem was caused by an earlier installation of a
linuxant modem driver, or possibly the use of linuxant's utility
scanModem.
I ran scanModem, which did not detect my modem, a Zoom 56K USB modem.
After some digging around, I downloaded and installed what appeared to
be an appropriate driver, which worked but firefox began only opening
in a pop-up window.
I have since removed the previous driver and no longer have a copy to
give a name or version, but it was a linuxant alsa driver for a 64bit
linux system.
The current installation of alsa-driver-linuxant v.1.0.19.4-1 seems to work fine.
I downloaded the modem driver on the windows side and transferred it to the Ubuntu side for installation, so I never opened firefox in between the running of scanModem and the driver installation.
But, I tend to believe running scanModem caused the problem.
There hasn't been any problem since creating a new profile.
