I changed the command slightly to reflect the fact that in firefox 3.0 the problem is also caused by the Adblock Plus 1.1.1 plugin.

The problem here must be with Adblock Plus version 1.1.1. So I installed the repository version, 1.0.1, and the applet in question now works fine. I had installed the Adblock Plus extension outside of apt not thinking this was a problem, I was apparently wrong. So what's the next step?
