was causing problems as it seems its DNS server was down. I watched the tcpdump and watched 40 seconds of request for an A record, 8-10 seconds, then a SERVFAIL, then that process 2-3 times more. All through this 30-40 seconds, firefox was completely frozen with the screen not even repainting.
This issue probably only happens where a DNS server is down (ie where you get to wait for a SERVFAIL as opposed to a NXDOMAIN which would happen quickly), but it's pretty awful when it happens.
I suspect the issue is probably an upstream one but I'm putting it here first in case there's a patch or setting in the ubuntu packaging which is causing it.
Binary package hint: firefox-3.0
