(I am unsure if I have to report back the solution, and where. I hope I am not bothering anybody in this email address. Well...)

Yes, thanks Micah: I did that and Firefox ran fine again; consider the problem solved. But the old profile was totally corrupted; I could not get back any data, and that was annoying.

And I am still concerned if Ubuntu will freeze again just because a damaged profile in FireFox.
