Bug Description

Binary package hint: mozilla-firefox

When clicking on a menu in firefox, say the File or Bookmarks menu, often the first entry get's executed instead of the menu being displayed, in the case of the File menu this would be "New window", and so on. I noticed that this always happens the the first time I click on a menu after starting the browser, re-clicking on that specific menu afterwards makes it behave as it sould. On the other hand, say I click twice on a specifc menu after opening the browser to make it behave properly, I still have to do the same procedure for another menu to make that one behave properly as well.
The menus work fine if I press and hold the button shortly.
The same issue, though less predictable, is present with the right-click, especially if the context-menu is triggered while the cursor is in motion (possibly related to bug #148381).
Using Intrepid x86_64, Firefox 3.0.5, Nvidia 180.22 Driver (GPU is 8600m gt), no desktop effects.

Update: pretty sure it is another bug in the nvidia driver, no problem at all with the intel driver. Marking as invalid as I presume it is another consequence of the generally slow interface with nvidia drivers...

I have this problem with Ubuntu 9.04 alpha6 using both the standard ATi driver and the fglrx driver + compiz, so I doubt it's related to the driver.

I changed the status back to new. I did not encounter the issue with the open source ati and intel drivers, but anyhow I suspect it is some timing issue. Possibly related to issues such as bug #148381 could be the fact that when opening any context menu, the pointer is localed slightly to the right of the top-left corner of the menu (see attached screenshot), causing the first item already to be selected (and if fact, if one holds the right button for two or so seconds and then releases it, the first item is executed along with the menu closing).

Im not entirely sure that this is even a Firefox issue. I lean more towards X drivers.
Anyone still seeing this issue can you please list all extensions and other addons you have.

(Just realized that what I wrote in the previous post concerning the mouse pointer being located slightly to the right of the top-left corner is NOT true for firefox, therefore that statement should be ignored - although it shows that menus in firefox work differently that the other ones).
Anyway, I run a clean firefox (no extensions), the issue should therefore not be related to any of those.
I am also pretty certain that the issue is with the X drivers (as I can only notice the issue with the nvidia proprietary driver - haven't had the chance to test the one from ati though), but in particular I'd say it is an issue with how those drivers deal with the implementation of the menus in firefox. In fact, based on what I noticed above, I suspect that firefox menu's differ from the standard gtk menus in some way.

As of a sudden I also get this issue with the intel driver... I tested on Fedora 11 Alpha (Firefox 3.1 beta 2) and the issue did not occur. Question is whether this is thanks to the newer Firefox version, to the DRI2 Intel driver (which Ubuntu does not yet use), or something else.

Are you sure that this bug is a duplicate of bug #187313 ? That bug is about right clicking and this one is about left clicking on the menu.

Sorry no one on the bug report said anything about <left click> I will
unmark it but honestly i dont see it being a separate issue I think its
more on right than left but we will see

I confirm this bug too.

I am running Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10 on a thinkpad. Intel graphics card and firefox 3.0.8 with mouse gestures redox 2.0.3 extension.

The bug occurs when LEFT clicking on a menu and triggers the first menu item. That is when i left-click on file menu a new firefox window opens, or when i click the bookmarks menu it shows the "page bookmarked" window and so on.

what i have noticed about this bug is that it is relatively new, perhaps some weeks or a month old.

Everyone:
Run the following command and try to reproduce it while still running in safe mode:

firefox-3.0 --safe-mode

I saw a few extensions listed above that could cause this bug.

I need EVERYONE seeing this issue to give me a list of extensions. Also make sure you disable compiz to seee if that helps

Extensions: Firebug 1.3.3, FlashGot 1.1.8.5, Mouse Gestures Redox 2.0.3, Ubuntu Firefox Modifications 0.6, WikiLook 1.3.7

Plug-ins: Default Plugin, Demo Print Plugin for unix/linux, DivX Browser Plug-In (mplayerplug-in 3.55), DivX Browser Plug-In (Gecko Media Player 0.7.0), DivX Web Player, gecko-mediaplayer 0.7.0, Java(TM) Plug-in 1.6.0_10-b33, mplayerplug-in 3.55, OpenOffice.org Plug-in, QuickTime Plug-in 7.2.0 (Totem), QuickTime Plug-in 7.4.5 (mplayer), QuickTime Plug-in 7.4.5 (Gecko), RealPlayer 9 (mplayer), RealPlayer 9 (Gecko), Shockwave Flash, Totem Web Browser Plugin 2.24.3, Windows Media Player Plug-in (mplayer), Windows Media Player Plug-in (Gecko), Windows Media Player Plug-in 10

I disabled all of them and the bug still occurs.

I also run firefox in safe mode (firefox --safe-mode) without checking any checkboxes in the window that appears after issuing the command, but the bug is still there.

What seems interesting is that the bug occurs every time on the Bookmarks menu but not always with the File menu.

Compiz was disabled during the above tests (System=>Preferences=>Visual effects=>None)

I renamed my .mozilla folder to .111mozilla and started firefox so as to automatically create a new .mozilla folder.

The bug is still there, both in normal mode and safe mode. :-(

After that i made the following test:
Closed firefox and reopened it. Tried clicking and releasing the mouse button making a very very small pause before releasing it. The bug DID NOT occur.
Closed firefox and reopened it. Tried clicking and releasing the mouse button as fast as i could. The bug DID occur.

I repeated the above pattern for about 10 times and gave me the same results.

So i guess the bug has to do with how fast someone releases the mouse button.

I can NOT reproduce the bug on my second computer though, which has a fresh install of 8.10 and an nvidia graphics card with 180 driver. My first computer where the bug does occur has 8.10 through a series of upgrades from 7.10 and an intel graphics card.

As stated above, could those affected try out firefox-3.6 from http://ppa.launchpad.net/fta/ppa/ubuntu jaunty ? With that build I do not have any issues anymore on every pc I've tried it out so far. If that build works one could track down the changes, or at least one knows that it should work in future versions.

After numerous updates to 9.04 (including FF updates) this problem still persists!
When opening FF for the first time and clicking the bookmarks menu (most used action on startup) the
system lags for a while, then STILL opens the "Add Bookmark" dialogue box.

Firefox now @ v3.0.10, latest ATi Linux Drivers, Gnome and Compiz.

I have been using Shiretoko (Firefox 3.5 beta) for a week or so now and haven't seen this bug re-appear. So can someone who experiences this bug regularly install Shiretoko and see if it persists? Note that you can have Firefox and Shiretoko installed side by side, Shiretoko will migrate extensions and bookmarks but a number of extensions won't work so you may not want to use it as your main browser.

To install Shiretoko:
- Go to Applications -> Add/Remove...
- Enter "shire" in the search box
- Install Shiretoko like any other application
