Still getting this problem on 8.10 with Firefox 3.0.5+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.10.1, Compiz 1:0.7.8-0ubuntu4.1 and Xorg 1:7.4~5ubuntu3. Perhaps Ubuntu needs to replace the default throbber with a simpler one until this issue is resolved.
