Some more information: The original throbber was 8 frames, with what looks like 100 ms between each frame. fps = 10.

The Linux throbber is 32 frames, and it has a 35 ms delay between frames. fps = 28.5

The Windows throbber is 24 frames, and has 31.25 ms per frame (more or less). fps = 32

My first inclination is that this is probably caused by simply doing more work, since the fps of the fancier throbbers is higher.
