So, let's change the word "offensive" for the word "bigoted".
People should feel a little uncomfortable. Laughter is an expression of discomfort that relieves the pressure and brings people together. If you're bringing people together *against* some sub-group of people, that's a problem.
There used to be much, much more of that than there is.
