Thanks, everybody! I tried what q41 suggested (sudo chown ...) and it worked.
Background info: Just like osfast, my Firefox problem happened when i downloaded and installed Google Earth.
(There were some files in my profile that were owned by root. This must have happened when i installed Google Earth.)
