I think this problem still exists on Linux.

Running Firefox 3.0.5 on Ubuntu 8.04 the symptoms persist.

Open the URL below in a new tab

Now use your favourite sniffing tool (wireshark, iptraf,...) to monitor TCP traffic. Close tab. Traffic continues. Select Menu "File > Work offline". Traffic ends.
