Branch approval took so long because we had just started a new process whereby we don't accept most patches that aren't security or stability fixes and were figuring out how to implement that properly.
(Another consequence of this is that we're approving – and thus, landing – patches much earlier in the release process than before which means it might take a while to see the fix in a released version.)
