Boris, you are right. I am running an Ubuntu build of Firefox. I just checked the "Help > About" dialog and there you are

  Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.0.1) Gecko/2008071719
  Ubuntu/8.04 (hardy) Firefox/3.0.5

They call it 3.0.5 but it's from branch 1.9.0.1, not 1.9.0.5. Bummer.

The problem does not exist in an mozilla.org build, e.g. firefox-3.0.5.tar.bz2.

So the problem is related to the Ubuntu package.
