Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox

I will be in Firefox, then I'll open a new window or tab with ctrl+n or ctrl+t, and I cannot type in the address bar or any place in the browser. It seems like a freeze, but I am able to open up tabs and highlight text with the mouse. A similar thing happens in Pidgin. I'm in a given conversation window then I switch to the buddy list with alt+tab, go back to the conversation window, and I cannot enter text with my keyboard. But If I do that again, then I am able to type in it again. This is frustrating. It happens on all three of my machines, an Athlon XP, an Athlon64 (32-bit system though), and my IBM Thinkpad T60. I couldn't find anything similar. And I haven't found people with similar experiences. To get the effect in in Firefox, you might have to open new windows more than a few times. My system is up to date.

Actually I've found a few other people who have had the same problem as well. Finally.

Some questions, because I cannot reproduce such a bug with Ubuntu 7.10 and all updates (tried several times).

1. Which Ubuntu/Firefox versions do you run?
2. Any extensions/addons installed? Did you try to disable them all if you have some?
3. You say you cannot type in the address bar or any other place, but where is the cursor at this stage?
4. Have you got a special start respectively home page? Maybe try with "about:blank".
5. Have you got compiz or beryl enabled?

I am running 7.10. I don't have any special addons or extentions to firefox. As for the version of firefox, 2.0.0.8 . The home page I am using is just google.com. It shows up and the cursor blinks in the search tab in the home google page. I try to type alt+d to go to the address bar and nothing happens. I try to type anyway and nothing happens. I have compiz-fusion installed but it is disabled. I can't say that this is just a firefox issue, as I said it happens in Pidgin and some other apps as well.

Another example, so it's not directly related with firefox.

I am having the exact same problem. I can't type in the second Firefox (2.0.0.12) window. I have Ubuntu 7.10 Fully updated (Including pre-release). I am running compiz with custom settings (compiz-settings-manager) and I have recently installed ktouch and ktouch-editor to try and enable media buttons on my Logitech Elite keyboard. I have disabled compiz and I didn't have any luck...

Ok, just tried more testing while I was typing this... opened a second window and same problem, but after about a minute... all the text just popped up in the area I was typing ant then the main window wouldn't let me type either... waited a bit...then the text just started popping up in both windows when I clicked in the areas I had been tpying in. Make sense? I tried to kill ktouchd through system manager but it wouldn't remove it. And I just noticed its status is "Zombie" not "Sleeping" (I only noticed this after I Killed the process in console, not sure if it was like that before, I didn't check"

I couldn't type normally again in the main window until after I closed the second window.

I meant to say I had installed keytouch and keytouch-editor.... not ktouch.
Going to remove them and try again
