I've discovered that the height of my browser window affects the scrolling performance, the shorter the window is the smoother the scrolling, the taller the window is the slower the scrolling.
I decided to try changing the height of my Firefox window by a few pixels at a time until the performance dropped to an unacceptable level (noticeable jerkiness), this ended up being roughly 820 pixels.
