Firefox Granparadiso changing workspace

Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox-granparadiso

I have Firefox 3 set as my preferred Web browser using Custom and 'firefox-granparadiso -remote "openurl(%s,new-tab)"' as command line.

I always have my web browser open in the same workspace (metacity) and I expect it to always be on that workspace unless I move it myself. That worked in previous Firefox.

Firefox 3 (firefox-granparadiso) changed that. Each time something wants to open a link in the preferred web browser (ex liferea), Firefox 3 changes workspace and raises on the current workspace (over the caller). That's annoying and unwanted.
I don't know if it's a bug or a new feature but in the later case, I can't find a way to deactivate it.

A screenshot for windows changing workspace ? you're kidding me right ?

As for step by step instructions, they are in the initial report. Or is my english so bad ??

It's easy to reproduce:

- using metacity (maybe other WMs too)
- configure firefox-granparadiso as your preferred web browser in gnome
- start firefox-granparadiso in workspace 1
- start liferea (or call it from the notification area if it's already there) in workspace 2.
[ liferea is just an example, could also be xchat, even "About ubuntu" in the System menu, or anything with clickable URLs)
- select any feed in liferea that contains an URL
- click on that URL (still in liferea)
- suddenly, firefox-granparadiso moves from workspace 1 to workspace 2 and raises over liferea and steals the focus.

Redo the same steps with firefox 2, the URL is loaded (in my case, in a new tab) but the firefox window stays were it was (ie workspace 1) with the same z position (no raise).

(my metacity prefs are no-autoraise, no click-to-raise, follow focus)

As I said, it looks like a feature, but in my case, it's annoying and unwanted so there should at the very least be a way to revert the behavior.

Still there in Firefox 3 alpha 7.

Seems fixed as of today's trunk (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9a8pre) Gecko/2007081919 Minefield/3.0a8pre)

Looks like Mozilla bug #388664 yet it's neither tagged as confirmed, nor fixed.

To confirm with Grandparadiso Alpha 8.

forget previous comment, it's not fixed as it's back today.

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9a8pre) Gecko/2007082119 Minefield/3.0a8pre

maybe it's something else, like a gnome thing.

Fabien Tassin (fta) wrote :

It was related to the way the URL was passed from the application to firefox.
Using "firefox-3.0 %s" in Preferred Applications / Web Browser - Custom / Command fixes it.

Change project name from firefox-granparadiso to firefox-3.0 and tag as invalid.
