Bug Description

Binary package hint: file-roller

Description: Ubuntu 10.10
Release: 10.10
file-roller:
  Installed: 2.32.0-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 2.32.0-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 2.32.0-0ubuntu1 0
        500 http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

The package says "An error occurred while adding files to archive". This is about as helpful as the old IBM 7000 Series console message 'Operator must do something'. Even running this from console does not produce a log of the errors.

If I have missed a report file, I crave enlightenment.

If there is a log, the message could at least say where it is. If there is not a log, then the package needs to create one. I need to know whether my archive is any good or not. And if it is bad, what parts of it are untrustworthy.

I have run this twice to two different external hard drives with the same result, and I am not amused.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue you are reporting is an upstream one and it would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug to the developers of the software by following the instructions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME. If you have done so, please tell us the number of the upstream bug (or the link), so we can add a bugwatch that will inform us about its status. Thanks in advance.

Most intriguing. I created an account and now it says my password is invalid. I don't understand why there should be such a dichotomy for bug reporting, and since I can't use GNOME Bugzilla until I get some clarification, I will have to rest here. Frankly, I have had contretemps with Bugzilla software in the past, and I am not impressed.

Interesting that a bug from 2010 should still be around. I haven't had this problem lately, but if it still shows up in testing, it should be fixed.
