to reproduce this bug open nautilus in browser mode using sudo or gksudo or gksu and then copy files or open/create an archive with file roller , possibly other actions also . this sometimes but not always results in the permissions on the root directory ( / ) not roots home dir. being changed to 700 which results in a system that will nolonger boot to GDM .
