I agree with aa900 that using Ubuntu Classic No effects mode seems to help- I will say that when trying this overnight a few nights ago, by xsession-errors file grew to 45GB!! Now, I'm not sure if there is a causal relationship here, but I can tell that switching back to the "non-classic" view made this issue go away (but not Im back to not being able to use VNC)

Most of the errors listed in the huge error file were related to Nautilus, and this may be another instance of the bug listed: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/738203
