Minimizing/Restore and compiz are still messed up. Also if I enable then disable compiz I have to logout and back in to get rid of sluggishness.

However following JUST the "finishing the install: configuration" portion of this page:
http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Jaunty_Installation_Guide#Installing_the_restricted_drivers_manually
did help a lot with video playback and overall slowness of system.

AMD 64 with ATI Radeon HD 3650 AGP.

I can play video in vlc using Xvideo output instead of X11 at really good framerate.

Only good for X1xxx and HD* series.
Add this to the Devices section of xorg.conf:
Option "TexturedVideo" "on"
You have to do this after aticonfig --initial -f I think.

Also running this command will enforce ati configuration somehow per linked page above:
sudo aticonfig --input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf --tls=1

My xorg.conf is attached if it helps anybody. I would just follow the site instructions if I were you. Also if you get frozen hold ALT+PrintScreen and type rseinub. Supposedly safe reboot, I haven't tried it, also from instructions.

glxgears output after change. Before it was 4500 ish. YMMV
