Running x64 Jaunty w/ ATI 3850 and ati driver version 9.6. No real sideeffects noticed so far. I should however note that the glxgears score has dropped (6800fps ->1500 fps) as was to be expected (Martin Olsson mentioned reduced 3D performance above).
Steps taken to apply solution. (This might not be the most correct method though ;)

Imported key: ubuntu. com 0x643dc6bd56580 ceb1ab4a9f63b22 ab97af1cdfa9
sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.

Amended the sources list following line using: sources. list ppa.launchpad. net/ubuntu- x-swat/ xserver- no-backfill/ ubuntu jaunty main
gksu gedit /etc/apt/
by adding:
deb http://
Reloaded list in synaptics.
Located the ppa under the Origin tab.
Right-clicked xserver-common and xserver-xorg-core and selected upgrade.
Rebooted.
