Today I improved my knowledge about the drivers ati and radeon:
For those on r5xx considering -ati and are confused why they use -radeon, "The ati driver is a small wrapper that probes your card and then loads the appropriate driver, either radeon, r128, or atimisc." (see http://www.x.org/wiki/ati ).
For r5xx cards this means the radeon driver from package xserver-xorg-video-radeon is used. Hope this information helps to reduce confusion. At least for me :)
