I am also getting this problem on Jaunty. Using the default xorg configuration, there is no problem and X works perfectly. This problem came in when I tried to use aticonfig to reconfigure X to accept a second monitor as dual-head. I'm not using Compiz. Attached is the xorg log file from the failure.
