From my particular card (ATI Technologies Inc RS482 [Radeon Xpress 200M]) I've found this "You need to have xorg-server 1.5.3 install that is the last version who support fglrx for Radeon Xpress 200M" on the Gentoo wiki at http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Dell_Inspiron_1501
Might that be related to this problem?
