I upgraded my desktop at home to 12.10 today, and wound up with complete failure of graphics: compiz would not work and hence Unity would not start - I had only a desktop and a terminal (accessed via Ctrl-Alt-T). Screen resolution was very poor (and used only 75% of the screen on a 24" monitor) - I couldn't even view the full width of a page in Firefox. It sounds like the same problem as bug #1058040 but my card doesn't fall into the category of AMD cards that are no longer supported by the fglrx driver. I've managed to get back to a working desktop by purging everything related to fglrx and using the open source drivers.
Apparently AMD is still releasing drivers for the Firestream series, so I don't know what went wrong in my case. I can try reinstalling fglrx to see what happens, or whatever suggestions might help diagnose the issue.
