Thanks, Joseph. The 3.6 kernel didn't fix the problem for me.

In addition to being a little slower to boot, the kernel also may have done something to the hardware. After the 3.6 kernel froze, I forced the laptop to power off by holding the power button (like I normally do when it hangs) and I could smell something odd coming from my laptop. I booted back into the 3.2 kernel immediately and within five minutes the smell seemed to have abated.
For future reference, is there anything I can do to shutdown in situation like these without forcing a power off?
