Sorry for jumping on the bandwagon here but I had a similar problem with this applet. I removed it, and readded the "User Switcher" applet from the applet menu, only to discover that it's apparently actually a different applet. The applet that was there before is apparently called "Indicator Applet Session".

I looked under the configuration editor and the bonobo_iid value of the applet it added to my panel is "OAFIID:GNOME_FastUserSwitchAppletGdm". The original switcher applet that was there is listed under apps->panel->default_setup->applets->fast_user_switch, and is called "OAFIID:GNOME_FastUserSwitchApplet". The functionality of the "Gdm" one is different. For one, the full name is listed, rather than the username so it takes up more space, and there are larger buttons for Log Out and Shut Down, but they bring up windows with further options.

So I changed the value of the bonobo_iid, removing "Gdm" from the name, restarted X, and the applet looked normal again, with the power button and username. Then I right-clicked on the applet to check its about box, and it tells me it's called Indicator Applet Session. The name is confusing, especially when in the configuration editor it refers to it as FastUserSwitchApplet.

I would suggest a simple renaming of the applet under the "Add to Panel" menu, as there is already something called "Indicator Applet", and it doesn't appear to be related to "Indicator Applet Session"
