"If you already know how to obtain and install a root certificate, what is the
urgency of having it pre-installed in Mozilla products?"

That if you use CACert certificates, /other people/ will have them trusted. That of course means CACert needs properly audited and structured in a way to prevent a disaster, but the progress of that is unclear. Such a progress report would be welcome.
