It looks like adding the line
/usr/bin/dvipdfmx Ux,
into /etc/apparmor.d/abstractions/evince and doing
sudo /etc/init.d/apparmor reload
fixed the problem for me. I don't know almost anything about AppArmor, and don't know if this breaks more than it fixes. :-) Got my inspiration from https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evince/+bug/452057/comments/7 .
