Bug Description

i didnt change anything last time ago, but suddenly i cant print any longer on my samsung clp-510 with splix-driver. i get the error /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstoraster stopped with status 1
but this happens only by printing with evince. the other programms print as usual.
you got a idea to isolate the causes?

Jan,
Does the example of gtk-demo (gtk2.0-examples package) works fine for you?
Can you also provide the output of the printingbug info script and your CUPS error_log as described here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems.

Looks like a gs-esp error, reassigning.
Does this happen with different pdf files or one in particular?

Any reason why you are using the openprinting.org distribution indepent driver package for splix 1.0.1-1? This is only needed to fix an important bug for the ML-2010 printers (see bug #112030).

Do you have the same problem with gs-gpl, open a terminal and enter the following commands:
$ sudo apt-get install gs-gpl
$ sudo update-alternatives --set gs /usr/bin/gs-gpl

You can return to ESP Ghostscript with:
$ sudo update-alternatives --set gs /usr/bin/gs-esp

that happens with all pdf files by printing with evince. printing pdfs with adobe reader works fine.

after changing to gs-gpl printing works also with evince - so you will be right, it should be a problem with esp ghostscript.

i'm using the splix driver 1.0.1-1 because i was searching for the right driver and found it at openprinting. nothing special.

No need to install the distribution independent package since splix 1.0.1 is included in feisty, just install the splix package with your favorite package manager.

In Gutsy the problem will disappear as gs-esp is replace by ghostscript, which is the latest GPL Ghostscript with the functionality of ESP Ghostscript merged in. This fixes a lot of problems, especially PDF handling.

Fix for this bug in Feisty and older would be offering a backport of the ghostscript package.

Similar problem in Gutsy, although it's using Ghostscript: some pages fail to print on my Epson Stylus C60 under CUPS,
with error message: "/usr/lib/cups/filter/pstoraster failed". Most importantly, some CUPS printer maintenance pages fail:
I got that error with the "Clean print heads" page...
So, I guess "problem confirmed in Gutsy", notwithstanding Till Kamppeter hopeful message. :(

Oh i did find a fix for a lot for some of this, you need to make sure the correct permissions on the rasters are usable. i.e. under /usr/lib/cups/filter the appropriate user has the permissions to use it (for example lp has access to it). In general the raster that is failing has different or weird permission settings to the others (please consider security when you change these things).
