Bug Description

Hi,

On a fresh install of the Ubuntu Gutsy beta September 28th 2007 there are no system sounds although all other sounds are working. The following error is reported in .xsession-errors :

** (x-session-manager:6760): WARNING **: Could not start esd: Failed to execute child process "/usr/bin/esd" (No such file or directory)

** (x-session-manager:6760): WARNING **: Failed to start sound.

This error was also noted in Tribe 5.

                Thanks,

                   Andrew

I'm also experiencing this. I have upgraded from feisty to gutsy yesterday (Beta release day).
The soundfiles themself are ok, I can play them via the sound configuration panel. It's just that esd seems to refuse to start.
Audio is played directly via alsa. When I force to use esd it doesn't work and i get a gstreamer error message.

I'm experiencing the same issue. Sounds are playing fine via Sound Preferences; however, are not playing on login/logout.

I may not be having the same issue. I have no sound at all. Not in flash or playing wav files.
This seems to be more severe than what others are reporting

I too have the same issue after I upgraded Feisty to Gutsy Beta today. System sounds do not play during start & shutdown but playing mp3 or ogg music seems perfectly OK

I confirm this (clean Gutsy Beta install, currently upgraded to 2007-10-05). Esd is enabled in System -> Preferences -> Sound, but various applications can't find /usr/bin/esd. Also, startup and shutdown sounds don't play. Using ALSA directly works fine.

I think this bug is a duplicate of bug in https://bugs.launchpad.net/gnome-session/+bug/129029.
Trying to run Totem got this message: "Failed to connect stream: invalid argument"
Running asoundconf-gtk in terminal Gutsy reports the following:
marcos@autoxtreme:~$ lspci -v | grep audio
00:0b.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Live! EMU10k1 (rev 05)
00:11.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 60)
marcos@autoxtreme:~$ asoundconf-gtk
You need at least one ALSA sound card for this to work!

This is fixed for me. Haven't had this problem with upgrades, or clean installs, all the way to Lucid
