Bug Description

Binary package hint: eog

in eye of gnome scrolling the scrollwheel should scroll and not zoom. zoom should be done using ctrl+scrollwheel. that way it would be more consistent with other apps and also conforming to gnomes own human interface guideline.

http://library.gnome.org/devel/hig-book/stable/input-mouse.html.en

using ubuntu jaunty

related: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gthumb/+bug/435550 (scrollwheel should scroll not browse)
a bit related: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-control-center/+bug/92607 (using "ctrl + mouse scroll wheel" for zooming is inconsistent in different application)

Thank you for your bug report, that's an option and the default has been discussed on https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=532543, not a bug but an upstream choice

As long as the Ubuntu packages change the settings in many packages from their upstream defaults (e.g., Firefox, everything with a Tools -> Preferences, etc.) why not change the gconf setting to make this reasonable and consistent as well?

Scroll to scroll is reasonable. Ctrl+scroll to zoom is reasonable. Scroll to zoom is a huge surprise to most users. Surprising your users is a cardinal sin in UI design.

i have to agree with this. if it there is an easy option to change this default it'd be fine too. but i still don't know how to change it.

I also agree.

Use this commandline to change:
gconftool-2 -t bool -s /apps/eog/view/scroll_wheel_zoom false

This has to do with consistency, EOG and Evince are very similar but the scroll wheel behaves differently, this is rather surprising. Since it's just about changing a default gconf value, I think this should be done.
