Can you try the following before trying to connect accounts:

- export $(gnome-keyring-daemon -s)
- EMPATHY_PERSIST=1 /usr/lib/empathy/empathy-auth-client
- Try connecting IM accounts

this actually worked for me.

however if I close the terminal with the above command ... next time I run empathy same issue.
