please update your system. you are not using the latest empathy in Maverick. After update delete all accounts in empathy and reboot/logout, then add facebook account again and let us know if the problem persists.
PS: generally there are people with facebook authentication have facebook.com already open in their web browser or they are not using their facebook ID, instead using their email address, which wont work.
