This is not invalid. Upgrading from 8.04 to 10.04, I received the same problem. As far as I am aware, I never used the keyring under 8.04. Thus, I do not have any passwords in my keyring that I care about, and can use the destructive fix listed here. However, it is worth noting that I did not forget any passwords. I have a limited set of passwords to draw from, and none of those work. Whatever the password of my keyring is, it is in no way associated with my current or former credentials.

Being forced to do "rm -rf ~/.gnome2/keyrings" before I can use the new 10.04 chat client seems like a bit of a hack. If this is going to happen to everyone, or perhaps everyone that never used keyring?, that directory should be wiped by default on upgrade.
