can you please install the development release of empathy from the ppa https://launchpad.net/~telepathy/+archive/ppa and see if the problem still exists. and let us know so that we can send this problem to the developers of the app. Thanks in advance

Sorry, I tried to do this, but in the development version I couldn't add any account at all, as there were other bugs their I think.

Sorry, I couldn't do that.

However, I found a work-around for the issue of my own jabber account appearing in the buddy list (though not the webcam + microphone issue mentioned above). I right-clicked and removed the contact (myself). However, it would be useful for other users if they did not appear in their own jabber lists at all (e.g. via automatic removal/hiding of that contact if possible).
