Bug Description

Binary package hint: empathy

With the version of Empathy in Ubuntu Karmic, it is now listed in the message indicator applet. Clicking on Empathy Instant Messenger from there causes the main window to appear, but unfocused (and beneath the active window) by default. This is absolutely unnecessary. If the user chooses it from the menu, he probably wants it and doesn't appreciate needing to move the mouse to the other edge of the screen to raise it.

I am using Metacity, and this bug did not occur at all with Empathy's previous behaviour (without the indicator applet).
There seems to be some inconsistency in whether this happens or Empathy is, in fact, raised. However, I have not tracked down a pattern.

I also observed this issue with Pidgin.

Kamus, could you please explain which information is missing? The "previous comments" to which you refer do not exist.

Thanks :)

Empathy currently toggles visibilty both when clicked in the indicator and on the icon. Pidgin does as well, but we have modified pidgin-libnotify to always show the buddy list when clicked in the indicator. We should do the same for empathy.

I don't think it was fixed. I still have it with empathy 2.28.1.

Here is a video showing the current behaviour in fully up-to-date karmic.

It's not really fixed, it has always raised the window sometimes. But I think more often than not it doesn't. Not sure if a fix for this will ever land in Karmic, but we will surely fix it before Lucid.

Does 2.29.3-1ubuntu1 also fix this problem: When raising the window, it does indeed appear above other windows as expected, but it does not grab focus -- which means that pressing Ctrl-Q to quit Empathy quits whichever program is running in the background, e.g. Evolution with the e-mail I was just reading?

I just tried this with empathy 2.29.6-0ubuntu1 and it does get focus, and ctrl-q quits empathy
