I have the same problem in Ubuntu 10.10.
The cause was upgrading emacs23 (and related packages) from 23.1-4ubuntu7 to 23.1-4ubuntu7.1+maverick1.

By downgrading, I solved this problem. However, I am sure that something is wrong with the new package.
I would like developers to fix it.
