Same here, ubuntu 8.04 Hp Pavilion dv 1000. ALT-TAB freeze X. To solve: CTR-ALT F1 and CTR-ALT F7.
It is noted that i installed xubuntu-desktop package, switched to an xfce session (it's still gtk) and there emacs doesn't hang. I tried again in gnome, but freeze.
