I get the same problem as Will Daniels here. The content of my global /etc/asound.conf is:

pcm.pulse { type pulse }
ctl.pulse { type pulse }
pcm.!default { type pulse }
ctl.!default { type pulse }

Note that I get the same problem with both Ekiga (whatever is in Gutsy) and with Skype (1.4 and 2.0 beta).
